Marshall House Hotel Token

VA103, copper, 19mm

The Marshall House Hotel in Alexandria Virginia is known as the

location of the first "notable" casualty of what became the Civil War.

The owner of the hotel, a loyal Southerner, refused to lower the Stars

and Bars flag that he flew over his hotel when ordered to by Colonel

Ellsworth. Col. Ellsworth and Private Brownell entered the hotel and

removed the flag but as they were leaving the hotel owner, James T.

Jackson, shot and killed Ellsworth; he was shot and killed by Brownell.
